Lightening Alley Lessons
I got bumped off the Zoom call…
Most people know Florida as the Sunshine State—but you might not know here in the Orlando/Tampa areas we’re also in “Lightning Alley.”
The storms in Central Florida are both terrifying and breathtaking.
This past Tuesday night, while hosting a Zoom call, a loud crack of thunder and a brilliant flash of lightning struck nearby—and just like that, I was disconnected. I couldn’t get back on for what felt like the longest five minutes.
In that moment, my body wanted to panic—but I focused on staying grounded so I could think clearly and make quick decisions.
Thanks to the kindness and patience of everyone on the call—and a few tech adjustments—I was able to rejoin and continue leading the group.
And that, to me, is progress.
The old version of me would’ve been stuck in overwhelm.
I wouldn’t have known how to regulate my nervous system or access my breath to move through the stress.
But over time, I’ve learned to use my breath as an anchor—not just during peaceful moments, but especially during the ones that shake me.
It’s part of my mindfulness practice—and it’s made all the difference.
When life feel's stormy, stay in the present moment to keep you calm.
Staying calm and present helps break the cycle of autopilot.
When you’re grounded, you’re able to make clear choices—saying yes (or no) with intention, committing to what’s true for you, and showing up authentically.
What helps you stay calm in moments of stress or disruption?
I’d love to hear what anchors you. —I’m always inspired by your insights.
“Practice mindfulness before the storm, so you can access it during the storm.”
