Yesterday, I finally did something I’d been delaying: I had an old, expensive dental bridge replaced. Not fun, but necessary. I didn’t wait for a dental emergency. I chose to take care of it before it became a crisis.
This wasn’t a luxury. It was a medical priority.
And it reminded me of the years when I didn’t treat my wellbeing the same way.
Back when I was deep in the trenches of caregiving, I told myself that my needs could wait. I kept showing up for everyone else, even when my body was whispering - then shouting - for help.
Eventually, the toll of over-giving added up:
Anxiety
Exhaustion
Weight gain
Abnormal labs
Disrupted sleep
A nervous system always stuck on high alert
It didn’t change overnight, but little by little, I made a powerful decision:
To stop putting myself on the back burner.
The shift began in my mindset. I gave myself permission to prioritize my health—not out of guilt, but out of love.
