What's your small calm comfort?
The smell of fires burning is a calm comfort to my soul in these colder days of January.
That smoky scent takes me back to simpler times - childhood winters, trips to see my grandparents in Pennsylvania, and the smell of wood burning from every fireplace in town. I can still feel the sweet anticipation of waiting for our school number to be announced… hoping for a snow day.
I miss those carefree days.
And yet, I’ve learned something important over the years:
I can bring pieces of that comfort into the present moment.
These chilly evenings, I still enjoy the smell of wood burning in the air. And on the warmer days when fireplaces aren’t lit, I light my "Autumn Leaves" incense to create that same sense of calm in my home.
It grounds me. It settles my nervous system. It reminds me that comfort can be chosen, even when life is changing.
I find comfort in a cup of tea & the smell of my Autumn Leaves incense.
What about you?
Do you have a small, calm comfort that helps keep you grounded as things shift around you?
Something that brings a smile to your face or a quiet sense of ease?
When life changes - and especially when you’re caring for others - having something familiar and steady can make all the difference.
Here are a few gentle ideas to spark your own awareness, using the five senses:
Sound: music that calms you or brings back good memories
Smell: candles, essential oils, fresh laundry, baked goods
Sight: photos of loved ones, favorite places, or encouraging quotes or scripture verses
Touch: a long 20-second hug, a cozy blanket, warm tea in your hands
Taste: a childhood treat, a favorite soup, or even sour candy to wake you up
My gentle reminder is this:
you deserve that same care, too.
When both you and those you care for feel grounded, transitions become just a little bit easier to navigate.
Today, notice one small comfort that helps you feel steady & give yourself permission to enjoy it.
P.S. I'd love to hear what comforts you. send me a note and let me know. It's fun to learn what makes others feel good too.
